Maritime Broadband Trial on Commercial Vessel
(August 19, 2008)  JSAT Corporation (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Masanori Akiyama; JSAT) today announced that in July 2008 it commenced a maritime broadband trial in collaboration with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Akimitsu Ashida; MOL) and M.O. LNG Transport Co., Ltd. (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Reizo Funakoshi; MOLNG). The trial is taking place on the Energy Navigator, an LNG carrier owned jointly by MOL and Tokyo LNG Tanker Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. The purpose of the trial is to establish continuous high-speed connection to the Internet and other communication networks at sea.

The trial is using two-way communication with one of JSATs communications satellites to establish a maritime broadband connection on the Energy Navigator between sea and land. This will make it possible to access the Internet freely from the ship. By using transponders on the Intelsat 15 satellite (IS-15; 85 East), owned jointly with Intelsat and due to launch at the beginning of fiscal 2009, JSAT is preparing for full-scale entry into the market for maritime broadband services, primarily targeting vessels operating in the Indian Ocean.

Since 2007, JSAT has been conducting a broadband trial on the Nippon Maru, a passenger vessel operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Passenger Line, Ltd. However, commercial vessels are expected to be the most important customers in the maritime broadband market, and by conducting the latest trial, JSAT aims to gain the expertise necessary to develop a commercial service and make progress establishing the capacity to offer services long term.
